DWDP - Gen 6, 1-2 The Sons of God
What if the strangest passage in Genesis is a map for reading the moment we’re living through right now? We open Genesis 6 and follow the thread from “the sons of God” and the Nephilim to Jesus’ startling warning that the days before his return will mirror the days of Noah. Not to stir sensationalism, but to name the deep currents—unchecked desire, spiritual rebellion, and cultural numbness—and to remind ourselves that judgment in Scripture is never just an ending. It’s the limit God draws so grace can rescue what would otherwise be lost.
We dig into the language and history behind bene elohim, why early Jewish and Christian readers saw fallen angels in view, and why alternate readings don’t explain the scale of violence and corruption. From there, we move to the hard pastoral questions people actually ask: Can Christians be possessed? What opens the door to spiritual bondage? Where do addiction, occult curiosity, and chronic patterns of sin fit in a biblical view of evil? The answers are plain and practical. Believers can be harassed but not indwelt by darkness. Unbelievers can invite oppression through repeated consent. Yet none of that has the final word.
Again and again we return to hope. Jesus cast out demons with authority, restored dignity, and announced freedom to captives. That same gospel breaks chains today. Prayer is not a weak substitute for action; it is decisive action, the kind that moves what arguments and strategies cannot. If someone you love feels unreachable, take courage—persevering prayer and a clear, simple gospel have toppled stronger strongholds than the one you’re facing. Stay with us as we connect Scripture’s hardest questions to the most urgent needs in our homes and cities, and leave with a steady conviction: Jesus is stronger.

Welcome to More Than Medicine, where Jesus is more than enough for the ills that plague our culture and our country. Hosted by author and physician, Dr. Robert Jackson.
Intro:Papa, can you tell me a story? Do you really want me to tell you a story? Well, you go get your brother and your sisters, and I will tell you a story. Welcome to Devotions with Dr. Papa. Gather round and grab your Bibles and let us look into the written word, which reveals to us the living word, who is our Lord Jesus Christ. Well, today we're at Genesis chapter six and we're going to read verses one through four together. Now it came about when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. Then the Lord said, My spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh. Nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years. The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. May the Lord add his blessing to the reading of his word. Now let's start with this. Genesis six begins the biblical record of Noah and the flood. I realize that there are many who doubt the veracity of the biblical account of Noah and the flood, but before you allow your doubts to carry you away, let me point you to a question the disciples asked Jesus and his response to their question. Two days before Christ's crucifixion, they asked him what shall be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age. This was Matthew chapter twenty four and verse three. In answer to their question, Jesus listed a number of signs, but then concluded with a prophetic warning. But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be, for as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage until the day that Noah entered into the ark and knew not until the flood came and took them all away, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be. This is Matthew twenty four, verse thirty seven to thirty nine. Thus not only did Jesus verify the historicity of the flood, but also encouraged us to study the time of the flood, because the days before his return will be quite similar. So let's look at the days of Noah. Verse one. First question, who are the sons of God? Let's go back and look at that verse. Now it came about when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful, and they took wives for themselves whomever they chose, who were the sons of God, who connected with the daughters of men in such a way to produce giants in the earth, as later verses reveal, the mighty men of renown, who were great in size, but also great in wickedness. Now one's first reaction is to think of Greek and Roman mythology, where the gods consorted with mortals. And then our tendency is to dismiss this account as legend and superstition, except that we know that the author of this book is God Himself, who cannot and we cannot just dismiss this account off hand. I realize that liberal theologians who are always trying to eliminate the supernatural supernatural element from holy scripture, and so by definition they are unbelievers. And they tell us that the sons of God are royalty, and by that they may they mean kings and nobles, who commingled with commoners in marriage, and it means nothing more than that. But this doesn't explain why the union of kings and nobles with commoners would produce physical giants and why it would lead to such widespread moral corruption in the earth. The phrase sons of God in the original language is Bene Elohim, and the only obvious and natural meaning is that these beings were sons of God rather than of men, because they had been created not born. Such a description would apply only to Adam, who was created, and to angels, whom God had directly created. This phrase Bene Elohim is used three other times in the book of Job, and each time it refers to angels. In this particular passage in Genesis chapter six and verse one and two, it's obvious that the writer is referring to fallen angels who are operating in opposition to the will of God. And just so you don't think I'm the only one who believes that angels had physical union with real women, this was the interpretation placed on this passage by the translators of the Greek Septuagint. It's the translation placed by Josephus the historian, also by the writers of the ancient apocryphal book of Enoch, and also by the early Jewish interpreters, and also by the ancient Christian writers. So let's ask a question. Why would people question the obvious meaning? I think it's a presupposition. The presupposition would be that it's impossible for angels to have sexual relations with humans and to father children by them. Well, this objection presupposes more about angelic abilities than we as humans really know. Most often in the Bible, when angels appeared to men, they appeared as men and sometimes they even ate meals with them. For example, when the angels appeared to Abraham, they appeared as men and they ate a meal with him. And when Lot's male angelic guest appeared to him, they were subject to rabble rousers who desired homosexual relations with his male guests. More than that, in the Bible, angels are described as men and referred to with the pronoun he and him. Now, Jesus said that the angels in heaven do not marry, nor are they given in marriage. But this doesn't mean that those who are cast out of heaven were incapable of doing so. These wicked angels intent on disobeying God and thwarting God's plans intentionally took human women in order to oppose the plan of God. Now here's another question. What of their offspring? What about the offspring of these angelic beings and their human wives? Well, the mothers and the children were most likely demon possessed. The children, the Bible tells us, were exaggerated in size and had unusual wickedness and were unusually violent. What about these fallen angels? For the Bible tells us that they compounded their original sin in following Satan and his rebellion against God by now quote leaving their own habitation and keeping not their first estate, literally translated their first principality, and going after strange flesh, as did the Sodomites. Now God has confined them, the Bible says, in everlasting chains under darkness until the judgment of the great day, casting them to a special hell, and that special hell is translated literally Tartarus, which is not the ordinary place of departed spirits where they are to be reserved unto judgment, as Second Peter chapter two and verse four tells us. So many demons are allowed to wander about on the earth, but these demons who fell from their first estate are not allowed to wander about on the earth, causing havoc and harm, but these who cohabited with human women are not allowed to do so, but they are reserved until the day of judgment in a special hell called Tartarus, where they are to be reserved until the day of judgment. This fearful phenomenon of demon possession that was so prevalent before the flood reached another crescendo at the time of Christ's appearance on earth, and the Bible tells us that it will again climax just before Christ's second coming. How do we know this? Well, because Jesus told us. He said as it was in the day of Noah, so shall also it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Now there are questions, and I know what your questions are. Can Christians be demon possessed? What about people who are demon possessed? Can people who are demon possessed be saved? So let's answer a few of those questions and answer to the first. Can a Christian be demon possessed? No, I don't believe that. I believe a Christian can be demon harassed, but not demon possessed. You see, a Christian is indwelt by Holy Spirit, and that vessel, that Christian's life cannot be inhabited by a demon and Holy Spirit simultaneously. So I believe Christians can be demon harassed, but not demon possessed because they're already indwelt by Holy Spirit. Can a lost person be demon possessed? Yes they can. If a lost person gives permission to a demon by habitual sin, by participating in satanic rites, satanic craft, by participation in sorcery, the word is pharmacia or drugs, drug abuse. They can invite satanic or demonic possession in their life. You've heard people say the phrase he's got the devil in him. Well, sometimes they're not wrong because alcohol abuse, drug abuse, participation in witchcraft or the occult, those are invitations to demonic possession and sometimes by constant involvement in carnal passions lying, stealing, cursing, carnal passions invites demonic involvement in a person's life. And yes, people who are spiritually dead, spiritually blind can invite demonic possession in their life. And the next question that people ask me is can that person ever be saved? And the answer to that is yes. Jesus cast demons out of people's lives routinely during his time on planet Earth. And yes, your praying is stronger than their sinning. Your praying and the gospel message is stronger than demon possession. And I have seen people be saved who I was convinced were demon possessed, who were alcohol addicts, drug addicts, sexual perversion addicts. And they were saved by the power of the gospel and by the power of someone in their family who prayed over them continuously over months and years of time. You've heard me say many times on this podcast that your praying is stronger than their sinning, and I believe that with all of my heart. Jesus is stronger than their sinning and stronger than their demon possession. The power of the gospel is stronger than their sinning, and stronger than any demon possession in their life. Do not fret yourself. Do not be afraid, and do not give up. I'm here to tell you that Jesus is stronger. Your praying is stronger. The power of the gospel is stronger than any demon possession, than any drug addiction, than any alcohol addiction, than any sexual perversion addiction in the life of your family member or your friend. Do not give up, do not be afraid, but you pray with perseverance, and you give them Jesus. You give them the gospel, and you believe and be convinced that Jesus is stronger.
