DWDP - Gen 4, 16 -19 He went out from the presence of the Lord
Genesis 4:16-17 tells us that Cain "went out from the presence of the Lord" - a powerful picture of those who walk away from faith. Whether it's young adults leaving their Christian upbringing or anyone turning their back on God, this passage reminds us there's always hope for return. For parents with wayward children, Dr. Jackson offers this powerful encouragement: "Your praying is stronger than their sinning." Never lose hope in the power of persistent, pure-hearted prayer.
The biblical timeline challenges evolutionary theories in fascinating ways. While secular anthropologists claim it took millions of years for humans to develop from cave-dwellers to city-builders, Scripture shows that within a single generation from Adam and Eve, their descendants were already building cities. By the seventh generation, we see the development of musical instruments, metallurgy, and animal domestication. This compressed timeline presents believers with a critical choice: Will we trust evolutionary theories or God's revealed Word?
This devotional tackles common questions like "Who was Cain's wife?" with straightforward biblical answers, explaining how early sibling marriages were genetically viable before mutations accumulated. Dr. Jackson also explores how God reveals His plans through prophets, comparing divine truth to "a fire burning in the bosom" that cannot be contained. If you're wrestling with questions about science and faith or praying for loved ones who've wandered from God, this episode offers both intellectual clarity and spiritual encouragement. Subscribe, share, and join us next week as we continue exploring how Jesus is more than enough for all that troubles our world.

Welcome to More Than Medicine, where Jesus is more than enough for the ills that plague our culture and our country, hosted by author and physician Dr Robert Jackson.
Speaker 2:Papa, can you tell me a story?
Speaker 1:Do you really want me to tell you a story? Well, you go, get your brother and your sisters and I will tell you a story. Well, you go, get your brother and your sisters and I will tell you a story. Welcome to Devotions with Dr Papa. Gather around and grab your Bibles and let us look into the written Word, which reveals to us the living Word, who is our Lord, jesus Christ. Well, today in our Bible teaching, we're at Genesis, chapter 4, verses 16 and 17. And let me read those scriptures to you.
Speaker 1:Then Cain went out from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden. Cain had relations with his wife and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch, and he built a city and called the name of the city Enoch after the name of his son. Let's look at that phrase. Cain went out from the presence of the Lord. This is part of the curse on Cain for killing his brother and then defying and lying to God. Defying and lying to God. We all know people who have graduated high school or college left Christian families and, quote, gone out from the presence of the Lord, leaving behind their Christian upbringing for years or even a lifetime, despite the pleas of family and Christian friends, they turned their backs on God with a cold, calloused heart, determined to wander in the wilderness as a spiritual vagrant, just as did Cain. Is there hope for them? Well, dear listener, of course there is for them. Well, dear listener, of course there is. As long as God is on his throne and as long as parents persistently pray with pure hearts, there is hope that hard calloused hearts can be turned back to Jesus. I want you, mom and dads, to remember this your praying is stronger than their sinning. Let me say that again your praying is stronger than their sinning and you have to cling to that conviction, cling to that belief, never lose hope in the power of the persistent, pure-hearted prayer. Now that verse also tells us that Cain and tell God you will not let go until your child comes home to Jesus. Now that verse also tells us that Cain came to the land of Nod. Nod means wandering, which probably means a figure of speech for Cain's perpetual manner of life, rather than an actual physical place.
Speaker 1:Now that brings us to one of those sticky questions who was Cain's wife? Obviously, it was one of his sisters, eww yuck. In the first generation, all of Adam's sons had to marry a sister. In that early stage, there were no mutant genes. There were no mutant teenage turtles either. There were no mutant genes in the genetic system, no mutant genes in the gene pool. Hence, there was no genetic, there's no. There would be no genetic harm that would result from these close marriages. It wasn't until the time of Moses, when genetic mutations had accumulated in the gene pool, that God proscribed incest in the Mosaic Law.
Speaker 1:Therefore, the ancient quibble about who was Cain's wife is seen to be really quite trivial. So Cain and his wife bore Enoch about whom we will discuss much later, because the Bible tells us that Enoch walked with God and Enoch was not, for God took him, and we're going to examine in depth what it means for you and me to walk with God in the same way that Enoch walked with God. Then the Bible tells us that Cain built a city and named it after his son the Hebrew term is was building implying that he started but didn't finish, probably because he had to resume his wandering lifestyle, perhaps leaving the completion of the city to his son, enoch. It's interesting to note that evolutionary anthropologists tell us that it took millions of years for our cave-dwelling ancestors to move from living in caves to the Stone Age, where they developed urbanization meaning living in cities and began to build cities. And yet the Bible tells us that within one generation from Adam and Eve, their offspring were already urbanized and building cities and naming them after their children. Imagine that.
Speaker 1:The rest of chapter 4 gives us a look at the antediluvian world. In verse 19, we see the first bigamous marriage. This man named Lamech who, by the way, was still present when the flood came, because he lived whoa like almost 900 years, because he lived whoa like almost 900 years, he breaks from God's original design of one man and one woman and he marries two women, ada and Zillah. Now, if you remember, all the way back in Genesis, chapter 2, verse 23 and 24, let me read that for you Genesis, chapter 2, verse 23 and 24. The man said this is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called woman because she was taken out of man. And verse 24, for this reason, a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife and they shall become one flesh. And you see, that was God's ordained pattern for marriage One man, one wife for life.
Speaker 1:And yet here they are in the sixth generation away from Adam and Eve, and Lamech has already begun to rebel against God's original plan. And Lamech was the origin of the Canaanites and he originally led the Canaanites into open rebellion against God. And here he is, seven generations removed from Adam and already rebelling against God in a bigamous marriage and leading the Canaanites in rebellion against God. Now Lamech had three sons, as we see further in this chapter. One was Jubal J-U-B-A-L, who developed tents and he became the father of the nomads and he domesticated farm animals. And then Jubal J-U-B-A-L, who developed the lyre and the pipe and he created music. And then Tubalcain T-U-B-A-L. Tubalcain, he was a half-brother and he was the inventor of metallurgy, instruments of bronze and iron.
Speaker 1:Incidentally, rather than taking millions of years to develop music, metallurgy, domestication of animals and building cities, as the evolutionists tell us, by the seventh to the eighth generation from Adam and Eve, these indicators of developed civilization are already existing, as described by the biblical record, as described by the revealed Word of God. Now, this is a jumping off place for your faith. You're going to have to make a decision. Are you going to believe the atheistic evolutionist who tell us that it took millions of years for mankind to go from the primordial slime to living in cities? Or are you going to believe the revealed Word of God, which tells us that, in just a few generations, from Adam and Eve, who were created by God, by the spoken word of God, to being able to build cities and develop musical instruments and instruments of iron and bronze, who are you going to believe? Well, I make my choice to believe the revealed word of God.
Speaker 1:Let me read you a verse from the book of Amos. Amos says Surely the Lord, god, does nothing unless he reveals his secret counsel to his servants, the prophets. You understand that God has a revealed word, and you and I know the past and we know the future, because God has revealed the past and the future to you and me through his servants, the prophets, he revealed to the Jewish people that there would one day be a Messiah. Through his servants, the prophets, god has revealed his nature, his loving kindness, his tender mercy, his justice and his righteousness, that the foundation of his throne is righteousness and justice. He has revealed to you and me that his eyes are too pure to look upon iniquity. He has revealed to us his character through his servants, the prophets. He has revealed to us his plan of salvation through Jesus, our Lord, through his servants, the prophets. Everything that we know about Jesus comes to us through the apostles and their writings. And you see that what Amos is telling us is surely the Lord God does nothing unless he reveals his secret counsel to his servants, the prophets.
Speaker 1:And then Amos goes on to say a lion has roared, who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken. Who can but prophesy? Listen? This word of God burns like a fire deep down in my belly and it is like a burning fire that has to come out of me. And every week, when I sit behind this little microphone and I switch on this little computer and I speak God's truth out into the internet, it's like a fire in my bosom and I simply cannot withhold it. And I understand what the prophets would say when they talked about having the Word of God pent up within them like a fire burning in their bosom, and how Amos talks about a lion has roared and who will not fear? And the Lord God has spoken. Who can but prophesy? Amos could not keep it inside. The other prophets could not keep it inside.
Speaker 1:The Lord God has revealed to you and me who he is and what his will is for you and me and his plan for your and my salvation to rescue us from our sin. Who are you going to believe? Are you going to believe the atheistic evolutionist? Are you going to believe the true and living God, who has provided for us a way of escape, a way of rescue from our sin through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died on the cross to purchase our redemption? As for me and my house, we are going to choose to worship the Lord. We're going to choose to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. How about you? Well, brothers and sisters, I thank you for your time. I thank you for your listening here and if you like what you hear, I pray that you will follow, like or share, download it, tell your friends and, until next week, remember that your doctor loves you and I pray that you'll have a very good week. May the Lord bless you. Real good.
